Summer 2019 Is Almost Here!
This summer is a big milestone for Timanous, as it’s the first season that camp will operate as a nonprofit organization. While there is always excitement around something new, there is also comfort in things which are old, and this summer will no doubt still give boys at Timanous the same experience as always. Garth Altenburg is excited to direct his first summer at Timanous, and shares his thoughts below as Opening Day nears.
Spring greetings from Timanous
Here we go! The countdown towards summer 2019 is on. There are several rituals in the camping world that indicate we’re getting close to another summer of camp. This year, many usual spring moments seem to be in an extended hibernation from a long winter. My recent visit to Timanous in early April revealed a fresh blanket of snow and plenty of ice remaining on Panther Pond. Thankfully, the ice was officially out on April 22nd!

Regardless of the extended winter, there are some rituals that happen whatever the weather brings, and are sure signs that summer is close. At the end of March, I attended the annual American Camp Association New England conference, as I do every year. It was a great opportunity to take a step back and think about the latest trends relevant to our campers, counselors and programming. I always enjoy meeting with other camp directors as we each are preparing for the upcoming season. Recently, I had a great meeting with veteran Timanous leaders Jimmy, Nick, Brooks, Fred, and Jason, and we are all excited for this upcoming season. I’ve also begun to notice some early bird migrations which indicate spring, namely the return of the Robins and Red-Winged Blackbirds.

It’s safe to say that we are all anticipating that first swim in Panther Pond and the warm summer sun on our skin. More than that, I am looking forward to getting to know our campers as we gather for the summer, joined together through the Timanous spirit! Thank you for all that you do to keep that spirit alive throughout the year.
Warm regards,

Campaign and Alumni Outreach in Full Swing
As Garth and his team prepare for making summer 2019 a memorable one, the Foundation is continuing to engage with the Timanous community to ensure a strong future for camp. The most satisfying aspect of our Second Century Campaign is how many Timanous family connections are being renewed. Our progress on fundraising has been very solid, and our alumni events have been well attended and inspiring.
Alumni gatherings bring together friends, old and new. Thanks to those of you who attended our alumni events in Boston (2/7), Washington (2/13) and New York (3/21). We’re really enjoying the energy these gatherings create. They’ve brought folks together who haven’t seen each other in many years, and in one case, over 50 years!
These events also enable our new Director, Garth Altenburg, and Foundation Trustees to hear directly and get helpful feedback from caring current and former campers and counselors. We’re hosting one more event on May 9th at Garth Altenburg’s house in Cape Elizabeth, ME, and if you’re nearby, we’d love to see you there! Email info@timanousfoundation.org for details.

A reunion rumor confirmed. Although the exact date has not been set, please start planning now for the Hundy+5 Reunion, to be scheduled for August 2022. For those of you who joined hundreds of fellow alums at the Hundy, you know that this is a must-attend event. For those of you who missed out in 2017, prepare accordingly! No doubt there will be much to celebrate.
Sandy Tattersall Fund – Help Us Complete the Challenge
What you are supporting by giving to Sandy's Fund. The fund will play a key role in deliberately fostering a Timanous camper and counselor body that better reflects the composition of the outside world. Accordingly, the primary usage of the fund will be tuition support for boys who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend camp. The principles of diversity, equity and inclusion will inform how we do this thoughtfully and to a greater extent.
Because we believe that camp has a profound ability to enrich the life of any boy, fostering the time-honored values of Timanous that have positively impacted generations of campers will continue to be the essential focus of our mission. The Foundation has established a Strategic Planning Committee to propose a balanced vision for realizing the purpose of Sandy’s Fund, and we are looking forward to sharing this vision with the Timanous family after a successful summer season.

Foundation Adds New Trustees
As planned from the beginning of the transition from private to nonprofit ownership, Dave and Linda Suitor have made a seamless transition onto the Board and are providing key support, insight and continuity in their new roles. The Foundation is also very pleased to introduce three additional Trustees, all parents of current campers and counselors. We’re fortunate to have their expertise, perspective, and enthusiasm for all things Timanous.
Kelly Dietel
Mother of Charlie (counselor) and Andy (camper), was a camper and Trusted Girl (first-year counselor) at Wohelo and Wohelo Family Camp for over 20 years. Kelly currently works at Shady Hill School and formerly worked as a child development specialist and public school teacher. She has served on several nonprofit boards including Winchester Community Music School, where she currently serves as an advisor. |
Michael Prior
Mike was a camper in the 1970s and is the father of veteran Timanous campers and counselors Liam and Aidan. He has been a long-time public telecommunications company executive, as well as a board member for several business and charitable boards, including the Trustees of Reservations in Massachusetts. Mike enjoys skiing and being in the outdoors with his family. |
Kara Van Norden
Kara will have two sons at Timanous this summer, as Christopher will learn the ropes from his older brother Duncan, who has been at camp since 2015. Kara’s experience includes numerous nonprofit leadership roles over the past 13 years. She has also served on a board committee of Dancing Classrooms, whose mission is to strengthen social and emotional development of children through the art of ballroom dance. |
