Thanksgiving Appreciation

Picture
Greetings to all in the Timanous community! At this time of year as the holiday season inches closer, members of the Timanous Foundation Board feel we have a great deal to be thankful for. We are grateful for the connection we all have to our special camp in Raymond, Maine; for all of the ways in which it has benefited our growth and development over the years; and for the close friendships it has brought us, both while at camp and beyond.

In a more immediate sense, we also are grateful to Dave and Linda Suitor for their vision and desire to preserve the Timanous experience for future generations. We are also deeply thankful to many in the Timanous family who, through their financial generosity, helped to make this dream a reality with the previously-announced closing on Sept. 20 of this year. We are now well into Garth’s transition in the director’s chair, where he has been working very closely with Linda and Dave these past ten weeks. Garth describes his time at the helm thus far:

“Greetings from Maine! I’ve been on the job for two months, and I must say it is an honor to be here and fully rolling up my sleeves into this meaningful, fun and important work. I am extremely grateful to you, the Timanous community, for welcoming me as the new director. I’m extremely lucky to work closely with Linda, Dave and our facilities manager, Robert Blake. I’m also fortunate to work with the board of the Timanous Foundation. This group is so dedicated to the future of Timanous, and are true partners to me.

In addition to the work of preparing for summer 2019, we are looking toward the future of Timanous. Our capital campaign goals are very inspiring to me. The Sandy Tattersall Fund will allow us to open our doors to more campers from a wider variety of backgrounds. We are also assessing the physical needs of our campus and engaged in the non-glamorous, but necessary, work of building strong budgeting and financial forecasting systems.

I can’t wait for summer and the chance to take it all in!”

Sandy Tattersall Scholarship Fund Update

Picture
As we announced in the October newsletter, the Sandy Tattersall Scholarship Fund has been established and, due to some very early and substantial support, the Foundation Board has unanimously approved an increase in the overall goal of the campaign from $1.0 million to $1.5 million. In addition, because some of the anticipated capital expenses will not be as immediately necessary or as costly as first assumed, we have reduced the goal of our capital reserve, recently named the Timanous Fund, to $1.0 million, from its original goal of $1.5 million.

Over the next few months, one of the fundraising vehicles for this next phase will come through representatives of each year’s Crows cabin (from the mid 1950’s through 2010). They will be reaching out to each of their cabin mates on behalf of the Tattersall Fund. There is no doubt as to the incredible level of impact Sandy had on those at Timanous over those 52 years, and we know of nothing that would please him more than to have this great cause generously supported by a large portion of the Timanous family.

To that end, we will be establishing some friendly contests within each decade to see which Crows cabins can impact the effort most significantly, either through their overall dollar gift level, or through their cabin’s participation rate. As you think about your year-end giving plans, as well as giving plans in the first two quarters of 2019, we sincerely hope that you will place this cause at the top of your list.

The Al Furniss Legacy

As some of the elders in our community will remember, Al Furniss was a beloved counselor at Timanous in the summer of 1968, who died tragically in a motorcycle accident on his way home after camp. A scholarship fund in his name was founded immediately thereafter. Now, on the 50th anniversary of his death and the fund’s inception, the Foundation trustees have voted to honor Al with a commemoration in the Barn next summer that will also recognize the thousands of donors who contributed to the fund, as well as the hundreds of boys who have received its support. Going forward, the mantle of scholarship funding at Timanous will be incorporated into the Sandy Tattersall Scholarship Fund, in recognition of the untimely passing of another iconic counselor. This “passing of the torch” has been shared with both the Furniss and Tattersall families.
Other News
The Timanews postcards should have arrived recently, and we urge you to fill yours out and get it back to Garth. We all love to hear what fellow campers and counselors (and their families) have been up to over the last year (or 5 or 10, etc.), and it is hoped that this year’s holiday issue will contain an especially large number of these submissions. Fill it out online, or snail mail it back, but don’t miss the deadline or Chids will come after you!

Stay tuned for more alumni events to be held along the Eastern seaboard in the first half of 2019. Both Garth and the Foundation want to connect with as many green and gray loyalists as possible.
